At the beach this summer, I went shopping almost every day. My favorite places to go were small surf shops. They littered the streets of Duck, North Carolina. One day i stumbled upon stickers that read "Sex wax- the best for your stick." The stickers were referring to the popular brand of surf board wax.Thinking they were clever, i bought 3 of the stickers in different colors: tangerine, pink, and yellow. I completely forgot about the stickers until a few weeks ago, when i was looking for things to decorate my school supplies with (It seems like everyone buys the same brand of binders and folders at my school, i like to make sure i know which ones are mine). But even though i thought the stickers were cute, i hesitated to put them on my folders. Sure, you cant get much more innocent than a sticker, but i thought that anything refering to sex like that might be a bit inappropriate for school. It seems like sex is everywhere these days. Everytime you hear a saxophone solo on tv or in a movie, you know someones about to get busy. Its even insinuated in Disney movies, like Mulan. You may not have realized it while watching the movie at 7, but lots of kid movies are littered with sexual references. I think its important to be open about sex, especially its consequences, but isn't hearing about it all the time, having it glamorized by television and movies, and listening to crude "thats what she said" jokes everyday taking that openness a little bit overboard? I guess that I, personally, can't do too much about the media's obsessions, but i decided not to put the stickers on my notebooks.
