All In A Lifetime- Chapter Two
The next day we had school. It was horrible trying to get out of bed, especially since no one was there to scream in my ear to wake me up. My parents left for a cruise Sunday morning and are gone for the next two weeks. It’s going to be great and I can’t wait to have my friends over. As I started getting ready for school, I remembered we were going to go snowboarding after school, so I got my stuff together and took it downstairs and set it next to the couch. Then I went back upstairs to my room and packed my things to go to Laura’s house. Since my parents aren’t home they said I could stay at her house when I wanted to. My brother, Josh, is staying at his friend’s house the whole time.
Once at school, I couldn’t wait for it to end. Second period, Independent Living, was gruesome. Then I’m in Calculus, right, and the phone rings in the middle of the teacher’s lecture. She talks for a minute and finally hangs up. She walks to her desk, takes out a pass, and calls me up and tells me to take all my things and go down to the office. Walking down the hall, I’m thinking to myself, trying to figure out why the heck I would have to go to the office. I don’t remember doing anything wrong. When I get there I notice Lee is there too. I get to thinking maybe they decided not to go snowboarding and my spirits dropped. The secretary says, “Leonardo, it’s your brother.”
Lee says, “Okay, let me have the phone.”
“Hey, I’m picking you and Bethany up at 1:30 to go snowboarding. Okay? I told the secretary that our sister’s in the hospital and that we nee to be there at 1:45 for her surgery. And that she wants to see Bethany, as we’re taking her, too. Alright?” asks Brent.
Lee tells him, “Alright. Do you want to tell Bethany or should I?”
“I will.”
“Okay. Bethany, just listen to Brent.”
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“Bethany? It’s Brent.”
“Yeah.”
“I’m picking you both up at 1:30. If anyone asks you, Nicole’s in the hospital and you are going to see her.”
“Huh, what do you mean she’s in the hospital?”
“1:30. Don’t forget and bring everything. Okay?”
“Yeah.”
“Mrs. Lohr, Lee’s brother is picking us up at 1:30 as, I believe, he has told you.”
“Yes, he has.”
“Lee, do you think your sister is okay?”
“Yeah, I hope so.”
“Here is a pass for you to leave early, Bethany, just come here and sign out. Now get to your next class,” said Mrs. Lohr to me.
So we left the office and I went to my next class, which was aquatics and Lee went back to work. We played water polo and swam some laps. Nothing to special, but I enjoyed it. The next couple of periods went by just as quick. By the time it was 1:26 I had all my stuff together and was ready to go. I met Lee in the office and at 1:30 Brent came and we left. We put on a good act and all put on solemn faces as if she were dying. The funny thing is Lee doesn’t have a brother and Brent doesn’t have a sister.
We all hopped in our cars and drove to Lee’s house. He got his stuff and we all piled in Brent’s jeep. We had to stop at my house to get my stuff, too. Then off we went to the slopes for a day of snowboarding and fun. We got there at about two o’clock and had until 6:30. We changed into our gear and put our other stuff in Brent’s jeep. Once we were all ready we got on the lift and rode to the top. I went down after Lee and Brent followed. I had to laugh. Brent went off the first jump and got too much air and landed flat on his face. Lee and I fell over laughing.
After going down a couple more times, Lee and I got enough air, but landed weird and we fell on our butts. Brent sat there laughing at us. Yeah, but his fall was still even funnier. We go down about fifteen more times and when we get to the top again I don’t feel like going down again, at least right away, so I sit down in the snow. Lee already went down and left Brent and me alone at the top. I ask him, “Do you know about Lee and Laura?”
“Yeah, I thought he liked her.”
“He must have asked her out yesterday,” I said as he helped me up. When I am up he asked me something I don’t quite think I heard right. He asked again. I don’t answer and jump-started my way down the mountain. He followed close behind and soon caught up. That’s when he asked me again and I had to give him an answer, except I didn’t know how. I sat down in the snow again to think making sure I was off to the side of the run. He sat down next to me and by now I am freezing from being outside so long. He asked for a third time.
I said, “Do you really want to know?”
He answers, “Yeah, I really do.”
I still don’t answer quite yet, I just scoot closer to him and look him in his big brown eyes and kiss him. I think he took it pretty well. He looked me in the eyes and said, “Now that’s what I like to hear.”
We both laughed. We finish going down the slope and I fall again. This time it hurts too much to stand on my left leg. I tell Brent to let me here and to go get Lee. He does and brings him back. They help me to the lodge and Brent stays with me as Lee goes out for a little more snow action.
Brent and I decide we aren’t going to tell anyone we are going out, because it is none of their business. I invite him to the Christmas Ball next month and he says that’s fine. He props my leg up and gets us some hot chocolate and ice for my leg.
