All In A Lifetime- Chapter One

Finally, I thought, it’s Mall Day. Today we will go shopping for holiday outfits and Christmas presents. Laura and I are waiting at J.C. Penny for Veronica to show up. All of a sudden we hear, “Hey, guys, where have you been? I’ve been looking everywhere for you. Well let’s go, we don’t have forever!” Guess we found her. Veronica suggests looking for dresses. We haven’t even begun trying to find our dresses for the Christmas Ball yet. We make our way over to the dress department and find a huge sale! Looks like we hit a good day to shop.

“Hey, guys, look at this one!” exclaims Laura.

After only a couple of minutes, she finds a cute dark green dress make of soft velvet, which matches wondrously with her brown eyes and dark brown hair. It has long sleeves and it’s knee-length with the most gorgeous lace design.

“I absolutely love it,” she says, “I have to buy it.”

She heads, by herself, to the sales desk to check out. Meanwhile, Veronica and I are still looking.

“So anyone new I should know about in your life?” I ask Veronica.

“I don’t think so. How about you?”

“Same ol’, same ol’. Why is it that the guys you like are the ones who never ask you out? It drives me nuts.”

“I know. Let’s see...Oh, Beth, look at this one.”

It’s purple, silky, and sleeveless with a velvet purple shawl that matched perfectly. At the same time I find the most beautiful dress. It is a silky, long sleeve, dark blue number. The back is open with a cute little cris-cross strap pattern. We show each other our dresses and...”Oh, I love that,” says Veronica. I say “Yeah, I think that will look good on you.” We go and buy the dresses. Laura’s not there though. We walk around and find her talking to Carl and his football buddies.

We wrench her away and decide to go get some matching shoes. So we work our way to the shoe department through the outrageously packed store. It takes us five minutes compared to our normal two. We get there and search through what’s left of the shoes. I mean come on, you know what sales are like. Once we find them we wait in line for what feels like eternity and pay for our amazingly cute shoes we just found.

In the mean time we decide to split up and finish Christmas shopping for each other and our families. I see some wineglasses that are absolutely gorgeous and buy them for my parents. Josh, my younger brother, is so lucky. I buy him a remote control-4 wheeler so that he and my dad can have some fun racing each other. Like last year, when they set up a course in the snow and raced remote control snow mobiles. Now it is time to shop for my friends. I buy them all gift certificates to Friendly’s, that way we can all go out to eat on night for dinner.

At twelve-thirty we meet up and head out to grab some food to munch on for lunch. Laura’s craving a hoagie, and the closet place is Subway in the mall. So we all walk there from Penny’s. On the way we pass by American Eagle and I have to stop to get another pair of jeans, since I just ruined one painting my room. I accidently spilled the paint tray down the front of me. I was lucky, though, because I had plastic down, so I didn’t ruin my carpet.

At Subway we are standing in line and who should we bump into, but Nicole and her mother, Mrs. Deserio. We start talking and find out that Lee just got a new car. It’s a 350z, which just happens to be one of my favorite cars. We order our hoagies. I get an Italian on the cheesy, Italian, and Herb bread. Laura gets a turkey and cheese hoagie on wheat. Veronica decides on ham and cheese on white . After we get our lunch, we head on over to an empty table.

“So you guys ready to school to be over yet?” Veronica asks.

“Yeah!” both Laura and I exclaim in unison.

“You’re lucky, Veronica, you graduate this year,” states Laura.

“Hey, what are we gonna do after we get out of high school?” I wonder.

“I think we’re gonna go to college , unless all the campus’ start swarming with nerds riding mutant roaches,”says Laura sarcastically.

“Well we all know I want to be a doctor and help people when they start to lose hope. So, I guess I still have college and medical school,” I remind them.

“Hey, guys, I gotta hit the bathroom or I’m gonna explode, “Laura informs us, as she gets up.

“Well, hurry up then,” Veronica jokes,”We don’t want to have to clean up all the parts you leave behind.”

Laura hustles herself to the bathroom.

“So, Bethany, what are you gonna do this week with the house to yourself?”

“Well...I’m staying at Laura’s for a couple of nights and then I’m free to do anything else I want.”

“Like...”

“Let’s see, I can watch The Tenth Kingdom and eat peanut butter dipped raw broccoli or ice cream with pickles.”

“You’re joking, right?”

“You tell me.”

“And you’re not having a party or guys over? Are you sure you’re a teenage girl with a house to herself?”

“Yeah, but I don’t want to mess with my parents trust. I’m lucky to not be staying with my family, or one of them staying with me.”

Laura comes back and asks if we’re ready to go. “Veronica, can you take Beth home? I...I have something to do.”

“Yeah. Are you okay?”

“I’m great. Never been better. Now I have to go. See you guys later.” And she leaves.

“That was strange, “I comment as we get in Veronica’s car. “

”I know, I’ve never seen her act like that before. I hope she’s okay.”

“Me, too.”

“So, what should we do until youth group tonight?”

“Let’s go bowling!” I exclaim. So we head over to the bowling alley and by four o’clock we have bowled about 6 games and we each have won three.

“Hey, Veronica, want to play tie breaker, and then go get some dinner before youth group?”

“Yeah, sure. Do you want to go to KFC or Ground Round?”

“KFC sounds pretty good right about now.”

“Cool. So...what do you think was up with Laura?”

“I don’t know. Maybe something happened that she wasn’t expecting and she just remembered it,” I answer.

“Did she have her cell phone with her?”

“I think so. Why?”

“Well, maybe she wasn’t expecting a call she got. Now, she doesn’t quite know what to think,” concluded Veronica.

“Yes!”

“What?”

“Last frame and...I got a strike.”

“Like usual. Okay, you won. Let’s go.”

We leave the bowling alley to get something for dinner.

“So what are you hungry for Beth?”

“How about some chicken?”

“Sounds great. Let’s go to KFC.”

“Nummy.”

On the way, we call the guys to see if they want anything while we are there. Big surprise, they do, so we order out and take it to youth group with us. When we get there Brent and Lee are already there. Since it’s really nice out, we decide to eat out on the steps.

“So what did you guys do today?” Veronica asks them.

“Oh nothing much, just some sailing.”

“Oh, so is that why you’re wearing... well that hat?” We all laugh knowing that the hat’s a joke. I got Lee a sailors hat for his birthday one year and it’s the ugliest color green with pink polka dots you’ve ever seen. He wears now every time he goes out on the water.

After we eat dinner and go up to the youth room. So far, we are the only ones there. Lee and Brent decide that they want to have a dodge ball game before Pastor Miguel got there. They throw, we duck. Meanwhile, Veronica and I sit and contemplate on how we should redecorate the youth room, all the while laughing at the guys acting like eight-year-olds, when in reality they are college guys.

Everyone else arrives, but Laura when Pastor Miguel started. Veronica kept watch for her out the window occasionally. When she arrived, wearing jeans and a lime green shirt which brought out her tanned skin, and her hair done up, she gave us a clue to why she was acting strangely, but wouldn’t tell us. I whispered to the guys, but neither of them said a thing. I tried paying attention to Pastor Miguel’s great lesson that night, but I kept getting distracted by one thing or another.

Pastor Miguel left the room, because he had a call in his office and the guys decided to play dodge ball again. While they were playing, we tried to make Laura spill it.

“Laura, what’s up with you today? You’re acting really strangely,”Veronica asks her.

“Nothing. I’m just a little confuzzuled right now,” replies Laura.

Then I ask,”Does it have to do with a certain guy?”

“Yes!” Laura says, excited and beside herself all of a sudden.

Then I ask her who and Veronica says, “It’s probably Carl.”

What puzzled me even more is that she said, “No.” We play Sardines next. We always play a game after the lesson. Sardines is a game where one person hides and everyone has to find you. When one person finds you, you can all move somewhere else. Once everyone finds you the game is over and you start again. The catch is that you play the whole game in the dark. We only leave the staircase lights on for safety reasons.

It was Brent’s turn to hide and I knew exactly where to look for him. I was the first one to find him. He was hiding right where I thought he’d be hiding, in the sound chamber of the church. Then we stealthily moved to the elevator room, which is two floors down. There he asks me, “Do you want to go snowboarding with me and Lee?”

I replied, “Sure.” What else could I have said, no I’d rather stay at home by myself. I had no clue why the heck he was asking me to go with him and Lee usually I go with Laura, Maria, Dylan, and Juliana.

Brent said, “I told Lee to meet us here so we could talk a little bit.”

“Okay, but he better not take long, because I”m starting to freeze.”

“Well we could sit closer together to stay warm if you want.”

“Alright.” He moves over to my wall and sits snugly against me in his new green hoodie. When Lee finally got there Brent told him I had said okay. Then we moved somewhere warm. That’s where everyone else found us.

Since everyone found us we went back to the starting point. Lee, Brent, Veronica, Laura, and I got together after youth group at Applebee’s and discussed out plans for tomorrow. I told Veronica and Laura that I was going snowboarding with Brent and Lee. As we were walking out Laura tells us Lee asked her out. We asked her what she said. She said, “I told him yes, of course.”
