My Dearest Rose
A flower is set outside a door
It's new; it's black
A man write a letter
He locks it in a cedar chest
Spring turns to Summer
And Summer turns to Fall
A year she spent in China
She made not a single call
She comes home that Winter
And finds a dyed- black rose
She tosses the wilted rose away
Into the trash with old used eggs
Months pass by quickly
She settles back into her life
Until the day she finds the chest
And sees what hides inside
In this chest she finds a letter
A letter with her name
"My dearest Rose, I miss you
And yet you do not call
I fear you have forgotten me
For it is nearly fall
I will always love you
Although you left
Read this and remember me
I love you, Ben."
A tear burns down her pale, soft cheek
She puts the letter down
She tries to make that phone call
But, of course, Ben is gone
