First Contest

As today is Dr. Seuss' birthday, we thought you all might enjoy a little contest. But first, a little background.

Dr. Seuss wrote a large number of children's books, including some 44 he illustrated himself. In May 1954, his publisher challenged him to write a book containing 250 words from a list of 400, in an effort to raise children literacy. The Cat in the Hat was written 9 months later, containing only 220 of the words given to him.

It is rumored that later, in 1960, Bennett Cerf made a bet with Dr. Seuss that he could not write a book containing only 50 different words. The result was supposedly Green Eggs and Ham. (all information taken from Wikipedia)

So, in that vein, we issue you a challenge. Should you complete it within the time limit, we will award you 100 points towards the Blogging for Progress Scholarship contest on the main site. Entries are due by midnight PDT on March 22, 2008.

Your challenge is: Write a short story or poem containing only 50 different words.

They can be any words you choose, and you can repeat the words as many times as you wish. You must follow the rules of the site (though we'll be a little more lenient on the requirement that the post be progressive). You are free to write more than one story/poem for the challenge, but you will only be given points for one.

Also, if you attempt to write a story, and it takes off somewhere else, don't hesitate to submit it here. Just because it doesn't meet the rules of the contest doesn't mean you can't post it.

If you have any further questions, feel free to comment here, and we'll answer your questions for you.

okay let me just see if i got it right.
write something using only 50 words but we can use the words as many times as nessicary (sp?)
right?

and also, other than this 100pt contest, can we ear points towards the scholarship on this page? or only on the blogging page?

Right. If you write a story, I think the minimum it can be is 100 words (though I can't remember... been a while since the permissions were set up).

Anything you post here will not be eligible for points for the scholarship outside of the bonus point opportunities we offer.

thankyou.
now that i know. i think ill take a crack at the dr seuss contest

Are the entries sent to a specific e-mail or are they posted on this site with a title that indicates them as part of the competition?

You can post them directly to this site. But to make them easier to find, go ahead and tag them with the Story Genre: "Dr Suess Contest".

Can we tag things here? I'm reading everything posted between now and the end of the contest anyway...

This site has pre-set tags to choose from (rather than the free tagging system used on the main site); I added the tag "Dr. Suess Contest" to the list to choose from for the contest.

"You can be in my dreams if I can be in yers," Frankie Lee's subconscious echoed centuries. His conscious lobbied against SCHIP, arguing traditional rational self-interest characterized America's passion. The "Constitution" -- "A Buddhist Guide To Making The World A Better Place" was not in his. We hoped him well.

:) Please post it to this site as a new story.

You can, if you like, also add a link into your comments/signatures on the main site to help drive traffic to your story... :)

Shux, i'm feeling rather discouraged. I've tried posting two different 50 word stories. On each, i received a failure notice, saying there must be 150+ words, but that's not what the contest seemed to permit. What am I doing wrong?

Post a 100 word commentary with your story. Or post it as a poem.

And it doesn't have to be 50 words long. It just can't contain more than 50 different words.

Thanks folks!

The system counts words for all stories, whether for the contest or not and requires 150 words for each story; similar to the system on our mainsite that requires 200 words for a blog.

If you can't stretch your story, then doing what Chelle suggested and posting some type of brief synopses would do the trick ;)

Oh, I think I've made a mistake. I wrote a story for the contest and it definitely exceeded 150 words. Shucks. I never saw that in the rules post so I didn't think there was such a small word limit.

You misunderstand...

The rules were to write a story of at least 150 words, using no more than 50 unique words.

Hi

Hi, I'm new to this site so where do we enter our stories?

Just click 'create content' on the right side of the screen, select the best category for your story, and submit it. I go through all the things posted since the start of the contest to see what fits and what doesn't.

...do the words include stuff like... "a" "there" "but" "to" "is" "this" "from" "and" "are" "like"

and so on?

please say no...

Unforunately, yes those do count as words.

But, even though it seems hard, it can be done! Think of the book "Green Eggs and Ham" - only 50 words there :)

That is totally not my style of writing. x.x I'd rather not repeat words too much, either.

Yea... I don't think that's many peoples' style of writing... ;)

It's a wonderful story, and I love it. However, your first two paragraphs alone have over 100 different words. It doesn't fit the requirements of the contest.

~C

And I suppose it's too late for us who've gone over the word count to submit again? Yeah, I bet it is. I didn't realize there was such a strict limit when I wrote my story.

Uh-huh. But I'll be posting another challenge sometime this week. Once I figure out which one to do and do the writeup for it.

~C

Okay, that's good news to me.
